Comparisons of iPads of different generations by characteristics. Comparison of iPad and Samsung

Apple iPad tablets first appeared on the world market in 2010 and in 4 years they have already released 6 generations of the device:

  • 2010: iPad 1 (2 modifications) * .
  • 2011: iPad 2 (3 modifications).
  • 2012: iPad 3 (3 modifications).
  • 2012: iPad 4 (3 modifications).
  • 2013: iPad Air (2 modifications).
  • 2014: iPad Air 2 (2 modifications).

Today we will talk about each of them, taking into account their features, advantages and disadvantages.

* By “modification” we mean equipping tablets with Wi-Fi and additional communication modules (the ability to use a SIM card).

The first iPad prototype appeared at Apple back in the early 2000s and was called “prototype 035.” According to Jonathan Ive, between 2002 and 2004, active development of the external concept of the device was carried out, which later became the basis for the creation of the first generation iPad.

Photos of the prototype were made public during litigation with Samsung as evidence that the device was being developed long before the patent rights arose (2005). By the way, the court made a final decision only in 2012 and ordered Samsung to pay Cupertino a tidy sum for illegally borrowing ideas.

Returning to the “035” model, we can immediately note that it is much thicker than modern tablets and lacks the usual “Home” button. There is also an opinion that a full-fledged OS was installed on board the prototype, like on Mac computers.

The first iPad was introduced on January 27, 2010 in San Francisco. The project could be called a pilot: Apple implemented a minimum of its ideas and gave the buyer time to evaluate the new offer on the tablet device market. Critics immediately pushed the device into dusty corners for its lack of camera, weak processor and iOS capabilities. But fans appreciated the new Apple device - in the first day, sales exceeded 0.5 million devices, and by the end of the year, a total of 7 million gadgets were sold.

The first generation iPad is strikingly different from its future reincarnations: clear edges, prominent walls and the impressive thickness of the device (13 mm) immediately catch the eye. Moreover, iPad 1 is the heaviest tablet in the entire Apple line. Its weight is 680 grams.

The lineup consisted of two offers: with Wi-Fi support and Wi-Fi+3G. The tablet offered three variations of memory capacity (16, 32 and 64 GB) and one color scheme - a black front panel and a silver body.

The first generation iPad is powered by the A4 processor. The total amount of RAM is 256 MB. Its power is quite enough for surfing the Internet, communicating on social networks, business correspondence, taking notes and supporting simple applications. Modern games, unfortunately, are too tough for him. The latest supported OS is iOS 5.1.1.

It is also worth considering that the “pilot iPad” only received an accelerometer and a light sensor.

Sales end date: spring 2011.

Second generation iPad

iPad 2 was introduced on March 3, 2011 in San Francisco. It is noteworthy that this is the last presentation that Steve Jobs attended. Global sales started on May 11; the tablet reached Russia only on May 27, 2011. The excitement during sales was so strong that speculators were even in demand, selling their place in line at Apple stores. According to some rumors, the rate for first places reached $800. According to analysts, 70% of iPad buyers purchased the tablet for the first time, which indicated an increase in Apple's share in the high-tech market.

The second generation iPad got rid of the protruding back cover - the body became smooth and streamlined. The speaker has moved to the back cover of the device, where it is securely hidden under the protection of a mesh with perforated holes. Before the advent of the iPad Air, it was considered the thinnest (8.6 mm) and lightest (from 601 to 613 grams) in the line of Apple tablets.

The lineup was the same as its predecessor: devices with a Wi-Fi module and gadgets that received mobile Internet in addition: GSM and CDMA models.

The second generation iPad received a faster Apple A5 processor with 512 MB of RAM. Moreover, the second batch of iPad 2 Rev A tablets was released. The main difference was in the modification of the processor: Apple actively protected itself from jailbreakers. It was possible to distinguish between batches only after connecting the device to the computer. The technical perfection of the device was expressed in the appearance of a gyroscope, rear and front cameras.

iPad 2 received a little more color variety: a silver body and a choice of white or black front panel. The amount of internal memory remains unchanged.

Sales end date: spring 2012 (for 16 and 32 GB), autumn 2014 (for 16 GB model).

Third generation - The new iPad

March 7, 2012 was the date of the official presentation to the world of the third generation iPad tablet. The official name of the tablet caused understandable confusion. After the presentation, Phil Schiller, answering questions from journalists, noted: Apple just wanted to do something unpredictable. According to other sources, Cupertino decided to abandon product numbering so that the user would not form an associative series: “a larger number means a better device.” Global sales began on May 16; the tablet appeared in the Russian Federation at the end of May. It is believed that the start of sales was a failure for our country. Among the main reasons were the active activities of resellers and the subsequent sale of “gray products.”

Externally, the iPad 3 was fully consistent with the second generation tablet. They could only be distinguished by the model number, which was located on the back cover. The gadget became heavier by more than 50 g, which users immediately felt during prolonged use of the device. Moreover, many noted that the iPad is “the hottest” among the entire Apple line - the rapid heating of the case also caused discomfort during long-term use of the device.

The main advantages of The new iPad are:

  • A gorgeous Retina Display that supported a resolution of 1536 by 2048 pixels per inch. At the same time, the overall color saturation increased by as much as 44%;
  • Work in 4G networks;
  • The rear camera performance has been improved to 5 mpx;
  • Video in Full HD format;
  • For the first time, it became possible to recognize faces during video shooting, as well as additional image stabilization sensors;

The new iPad runs under the strict guidance of the Apple A5X processor. RAM capabilities have increased to 1024 MB. It featured the Siri voice assistant and dictation capabilities for the first time.

The offered memory capacities (16, 32 and 64 GB) and color solutions (black/white silver) remained unchanged.

Sales end date: November 2012.

Fourth generation - iPad with Retina Display

On October 23, 2012, another presentation of new products from Apple took place, where the iPad with Retina Display was presented. In fact, it was a well-developed version of the iPad 3. It is noteworthy that for the first time in many years the presentation was held in San Jose.

The main external difference between the iPad 4 and previous models is the updated Lighting USB connector. From that moment on, the model range consisted of 3 varieties: Wi-Fi model, “American” and “global” Cellular. The difference is in the supported LTE network bands.

The tablet is the proud owner of the Apple A6X processor, which is twice as powerful as the 5 Series and has four graphics cores on board. The dual-core processor operates at a clock frequency of 1.5 MHz.

Despite the increased capabilities, iPad 4 Gen is able to work without additional recharging for more than 10 hours. The gadget also boasts a front-facing HD camera and AirDrop support.

For the first time, Apple has expanded the amount of possible user storage to 128 GB.

Sales end date: November 2013.

Fifth generation - iPad Air

On October 22, 2013, Apple introduced the iPad Air. The presentation took place at the Contemporary Arts Center in San Francisco. The event was held under the mysterious slogan “we have more to tell.” The Cupertino team showed a tablet that is capable of conquering airspace: “Air” - lighter than air. Already in the first month of sales, iPad Air took 3% of the share of all Apple tablets on the market. It is noteworthy that the tablet officially appeared in Russia on November 13.

With the fifth generation, significant external metamorphoses occurred. The first thing that catches your eye is that the frames around the screen have become much narrower. The overall dimensions are impressive, especially compared to previous generations. Since the release of the first iPad, the overall length of the gadget has decreased by 3 mm, width by 20.5 mm, and thickness by 5.5 mm. Since 2010, the device has lost 201 grams (for the wi-fi model) and 202 grams (for the cellular model), which can be equated to a full glass of semolina. Two stereo speakers and one internal microphone were added to the back cover. And the volume buttons are divided into two halves.

The model range again included three positions: Wi-Fi, LTE and TD-LTE. The latter is intended for countries in Southeast Asia.

The device's production capacity has increased tenfold thanks to the coordinated work of the Apple A7 processor and M7 co-processor. While the amount of RAM remained unchanged (1024 MB), its clock frequency jumped to 800 MHz.

iPad Air is available in two colors: silver and space gray. The amount of user memory is presented in 4 variations and ranges from 16 to 128 GB.

Sales end date: October 2014 (64 and 128 GB models). 16 and 32 GB can still be found on store shelves.

Sixth generation - iPad Air 2

By October 16, 2014, the Yerba Buena Center (San Francisco) had once again transformed itself and introduced the world to the world's thinnest tablet: the iPad Air 2. “Can you even see it?” - asked Tim Cook, demonstrating the new product to the audience. For the first time, Russia was secretly included in the list of countries of the first wave - official sales started on October 24.

The length and width of the Air tablets remained unchanged. But the thickness was 6.1 mm (-1.4 mm), and the weight was 437 (Wi-Fi) and 444 grams (LTE).

Combining the display with a touchscreen made it possible not only to significantly reduce the thickness of the device, but also to add an anti-glare coating to the screen.

The main production load fell on the A8x processor, in which it was possible to increase CPU parameters by 40% and improve the performance of the graphic display by 2 times. The M8 co-processor took over the functions of motion control, barometer and sensor calibration.

A long-awaited update was the appearance of Touch ID fingerprint recognition sensors and Apple Pay support in iPad tablets. The quality of photography has increased due to the implantation of an 8 megapixel camera. Additional features include shooting in slo-mo and time-lapse modes, as well as the ability to take a series of pictures. The device was equipped with a lever, which was responsible for switching modes.

It is noteworthy that for the first time the 32 GB model will not be on sale. But a model with a gold body color appeared in the line.

Sales end date: currently on sale.

Apple tablets are characterized by quality, so don't be surprised that 2-year-old models remain the best representatives of the class in 2020.

There are also older models to consider, which, while not sold directly in Apple stores, remain available from retailers, often at steep discounts.

With all this in mind, the number of options available can seem overwhelming, and you could end up spending more than you planned on buying an iPad that doesn't suit your needs at all. But you can avoid this fate by simply reading our guide. Below you'll find our roundup of the best iPads in 2020, with pros and cons, tablet specs, and of course access to full reviews of each model in the rankings if you want to take a closer look at any of the options below.

  • Find out what are in the world;
  • Not an Apple fan? Look ;

1 | IPAD PRO 11 (2018)

BEST IPAD YOU CAN BUY IN 2020

Weight: 468 grams | Dimensions: 247.6 x 178.5 x 5.9 mm | OS: iOS 12 | Screen size: 11-inch | Permission: 2388 x 1668 pixels | CPU: 12X Bionic | Memory MicroSD slot: No | Battery: 7812 mAh | Main camera: 12 MP | Front-camera: 7 MP.

  • pros: Stylus mount | Monstrous performance;
  • Minuses: Software inferior to laptop | Stylus and keyboard separately;

The iPad Pro 11 is the best iPad you can buy in 2020. It may be an expensive tablet, but it's Apple's most powerful iPad yet, and it aims for a 2-in-1 design if you can afford the pricey keyboard.

The tablet has a laptop-like design and performance, and the new Apple Pencil attaches to the iPad Pro body using built-in magnets. With excellent speakers and a great screen-to-body ratio, it's hard not to love the carefully crafted design and hardware components inside.

And with the release of iPadOS, its software has changed, making the tablet even better than at launch.

Another purely mobile problem: the tablet does not have a headphone jack. If you need a standard 3.5mm port in your mobile computer, an Apple tablet is not the best choice.

Everything the iPad Pro 11 offers makes it Apple's best tablet - you'll just have to swallow the high price and the fact that it won't completely replace the MacBook.

2 | IPAD PRO 12.9 (2018)

BEST IPAD AMONG LARGE TABLETS

Weight: 632 g | Dimensions: 280.6 x 214.9 x 5.9 mm | OS: iOS 12 | Screen size: 12.9 inch | Permission: 2732 x 2048 pixels | CPU: A12X Bionic | Built-in memory: 64 GB / 256 GB / 512 GB / 1 TB | microSD slot: No | Battery: 9720 mAh | Main camera: 12 MP | Front-camera: 7 MP.

  • pros: Big screen | Unsurpassed sound quality;
  • Minuses: Battery life | Face ID quality;

The iPad Pro 12.9 (2018) is a giant monster - a monster, but in a good way, as it will easily take over half of your life's digital tasks - goodbye mobile phone, laptop, album, mixing console, games console. It's the perfect tablet for creativity and work, with a huge screen, useful peripherals, and fast iPadOS.

It offers the most processing power available in a mobile device, four speakers, a bright screen and, depending on the model, more storage space than you'll ever need.

The tablet doesn't offer the best battery life, so don't expect long-term use. You may not be able to use it to watch movies on a long trip, nor will you be able to use it to mix music. The tablet also charges quite slowly.

Overall, the iPad Pro 12.9 (2018) is one of the best iPads you can buy in 2020, but if you don't need its huge display, the cheaper iPad Pro 11 will save you some money and remain more portable.

3 | iPad 10.2

Apple's base iPad gets a larger screen.

Weight: 483 g | Dimensions: 250.6 x 174.1 x 7.5 mm | OS: iPadOS 13 | Screen size: 10.2 inch | Permission: 2160 x 1620 | CPU: A10 Fusion | RAM: 3 GB | Physical memory: 32 / 128 GB | microSD slot: No | Battery: 8827 mAh | Main camera: 8 MP | Front-camera: 1.2 MP.

  • pros: The display has become larger | Smart Keyboard support;
  • Minuses: Slightly better than iPad 9.7 | iPad Air is better for drawing;

iPad 10.2 marks the next step in bringing Apple's base line of tablets even closer to the iPad Pro - or at least the latest iPad Air - thanks to support for the Smart Keyboard and a slight increase in screen size from 9.7 to 10.2 inches.

The iPad 10.2, among other things, offers some performance gains with at least one extra gigabyte of RAM compared to the iPad 9.7 (2018), although it still runs on A10 chips.

The design remains largely the same, meaning the bezels around the display are quite large and the home button remains, so if you're looking for one of Apple's sleekest tablets, this isn't it.

On the other hand, excellent battery life, decent performance and a very low price - at least by Apple standards - mean a lot to the average user, especially if you're looking for the best Apple iPad features on a budget.

4 | IPAD AIR 10.5 (2019)

BEST COMPROMISE FOR STUDENTS

Weight: 456 g | Dimensions: 250.6 x 174.1 x 6.1 mm | OS: iOS 12 | Screen size: 10.5 inch | Permission: 2224 x 1668 pixels | CPU: A12 Bionic | Built-in memory: 64 GB / 256 GB | microSD slot: No | Main camera: 8 MP | Front-camera: 7 MP.

  • pros: Laminated screen | Smart Keyboard support;
  • Minuses: Works with 1st generation Pencil | Old design;

The new iPad Air with a 10.5-inch screen is the perfect compromise between the entry-level iPad 9.7 and the more powerful but also expensive iPad Pro 11. In most stores in Russia it is sold at the price of the original iPad, so it is cheaper than the iPad Pro 10.5 (2017), which it replaces, although it is not a member of the “Pro” family. However, the tablet offers several high-quality features that make it a compelling addition to your laptop.

It's one of the cheapest iPads available that's compatible with Apple's Smart Keyboard Cover, meaning you won't have to deal with fancy Bluetooth keyboards to get the full tablet experience.

It is also equipped with Apple's A12 chipset, borrowed from the iPhone XS. This is an incredibly fast tablet. Students will be able to take notes and respond to email using a tablet, but artists will hate the first generation Apple Pencil.

5 | IPAD MINI (2019)

BEST SMALL TABLET OF 2020

Weight: 304 g | Dimensions: 203.2 x 134.8 x 6.1 mm | OS: iOS 12 | Screen size: 7.9 inch | Permission: 2048 x 1536 pixels | CPU: A12 Bionic | Built-in memory: 64 GB / 256 GB | microSD slot: No | Battery: 5124 mAh | Main camera: 8 MP | Front-camera: 7 MP.

  • pros: Compact size | Surprisingly powerful;
  • Minuses: Thick screen panels | Old Pencil;

Sometimes, as a tablet, you need a device that's little larger than a phone, and the iPad Mini (2019) fits the bill. It's a sleek tablet with impressive specs, the latest Apple processor, and decent battery life.

What makes the iPad Mini (2019) the best Apple tablet of 2020 is the ability to use the Apple Pencil, which turns the iPad into a tiny laptop in your pocket.

The iPad Mini (2019) is one of the best compact tablets available on the market in 2020, so if you're looking for a portable, pocket-sized device, you can't find a tablet better than the iPad Mini.

6 | IPAD PRO 10.5 (2017)

EXPERIENCE WITH IPAD PRO FOR CHEAPER

Weight: 469 grams | Dimensions: 250 x 174.1 x 6.1 mm | OS: iOS 12 | Screen size: 10.5 inch | Permission: 2224 x 1668 pixels | CPU: A10X Fusion | RAM: 4 GB | Built-in memory: 64 / 256 / 512 GB | MicroSD slot: No | Battery: 8134 mAh | Main camera: 12 MP | Front-camera: 7 MP.

  • pros: Great speakers | 512 GB model;
  • Minuses: Screen raises price | iOS doesn't allow you to replace your laptop;

The iPad Pro 10.5 is Apple's all-star tablet, which recently succeeded the iPad Pro 11. There is good news for the Pro 10.5, however, as the tablet is now cheaper - although it continues to be sold directly from Apple

The new ProMotion screen offers an extra level of fluidity in everyday use - and the smaller bezels are exactly what make the screen larger while still keeping the overall size of a 9.7-inch tablet in 2020.

This is the iPad for professionals and those who enjoy consuming the highest quality multimedia content.

It takes advantage of the Apple Pencil and some iPadOS tablet features, including the Dock panel, Control Center, and Instant Markup with a stylus. If you invest in a recommended Smart Keyboard, you can take your iPad Pro to the next level without having to jump through hoops with Bluetooth accessories.

7 | iPad 9.7 (2018)

GOOD IPAD FOR THE TYPICAL USER

Weight: 469 grams | Dimensions: 240 x 169.5 x 7.5 mm | OS: iOS 12 | Screen size: 9.7 inch | Permission: 2048 x 1536 pixels | CPU: A10 Bionic | RAM: 2 GB | Built-in memory: 32 / 128 GB | MicroSD slot: No | Battery: up to 10 o'clock | Main camera: 8 MP | Front-camera: 1.2 MP.

  • pros: Inexpensive | Works with Apple Pencil;
  • Minuses: Educational ambitions | No Smart Keyboard;

This is Apple's best iPad for the average consumer and education segment, even if it is still not the most powerful tablet from the manufacturer, what it lacks in performance it makes up for in price. On the other hand, the new iPad 10.2 is superior to the original iPad 9.7 in a number of ways, with the advantage of being available in Apple stores, whereas the 9.7-inch iPad is no longer available from Apple.

The new iPad (2018) succeeds the extremely similar iPad (2017), sitting below the Pro and Air series, remaining a solid tablet that hasn't changed much over the years - but Apple clearly thinks the idea is a success.

It works with Apple Pencil, offering you the cheapest way to draw on the 9.7-inch screen, although you won't be able to get a Smart Keyboard with this model, an option that remains exclusive to the Pro.

It also has a luxurious metal body, like all of Apple's iPads, although it's slightly thicker than the iPad Air 2 and iPad Pro at 7.5mm.

With a built-in fingerprint scanner, iOS 12 under the hood and up to 10 hours of battery life for web browsing or video, the new iPad (2018) is an excellent media player and a good tablet in all respects, as long as you don't plan to use it for demanding tasks. task performance.

8 | iPad 9.7 (2017)

PREMIUM BUT AFFORDABLE IPAD

Weight: 469 grams | Dimensions: 240 x 169.5 x 7.5 | OS: iOS 12 | Screen size: 9.7 inch | Permission: 2048 x 1536 | CPU: A9 | RAM: 2 GB | Built-in memory: 32 GB / 128 GB | MicroSD slot: No | Battery: 8827 mAh | Main camera: 8 MP | Front-camera: 1.2 MP.

  • pros: Sound quality | Performance for the price;
  • Minuses: Apple Pencil separately | Old design;

iPad (2017) marked a name change for Apple's tablet series, as the Cupertino firm ditched "Air" in favor of a clean moniker.

Since then, the iPad (2017) has been replaced by the new iPad (2018), followed by the iPad 10.2 (2019), but it's still a good iPad if you're looking for Apple's most affordable tablet in 2020.

The only real problem is that new iPads don't cost much more, so if you can afford the price difference, a new 2018 or 2019 tablet is a better buy.

9 | IPAD PRO 12.9 (2017)

OLD BUT GREAT IPAD

Weight: 677 grams | Dimensions: 305.7 x 220.6 x 6.9 mm | OS: iOS 12 | Screen size: 12.9 inch | Permission: 2732 x 2048 pixels | CPU: A10X Fusion | RAM: 4 GB | Built-in memory: 64 / 256 / 512 GB | MicroSD slot: No | Battery: 10875 mAh | Main camera: 12 MP | Front-camera: 7 MP.

  • pros: Big screen | Huge productivity;
  • Minuses: Too expensive for some;

We really like the iPad Pro for its large size, and this tablet comes the closest to emulating the MacBook with its 2-in-1 hybrid form factor. It just runs iPadOS 13 instead of macOS.

It's the best tablet in terms of productivity and entertainment thanks to its 12.9-inch screen, four speakers and a docking station, along with a multitasking interface. Apple has redesigned its Control Center interface to make it easier to navigate between apps, and the tablet is also compatible with the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard.

Biggest weakness? The iPad Pro 12.9 price and size simply aren't right for everyone. But if you can afford it and want the largest iPad available, you'll love this tablet and it can replace a laptop for many.

10 | IPAD MINI 4

OUTDATED BUT DECENT.

Weight: 299 grams | Dimensions: 203.2 x 134.8 x 6.1 mm | OS: iOS 12 | Screen size: 7.9 inch | Permission: 2048 x 1536 pixels | CPU: A8 | RAM: 2 GB | Built-in memory: 16 / 32 / 64 / 128 GB | MicroSD slot: No | Battery: 5124 mAh | Main camera: 8 MP | Front-camera: 1.2 MP.

  • pros: Big screen | Sleek design;
  • Minuses: Old processor | No fingerprint scanner;

Big screens aren't for everyone, which is where the 7.9-inch iPad Mini 4 comes in. The screen size means it's much more compact than Apple's larger tablets, especially since it weighs just 299 grams. Of course, it's not small enough that you can easily use it with one hand, but you'll be able to comfortably hold it for much longer than most Apple tablets, and you'll be able to toss it into your bag with ease.

It's also large enough that you can enjoy browsing the web or watching videos when you're away from home and the big screen, but the 7.9-inch tablet obviously won't be able to offer the same visual media consumption experience as older ones 9.7- and 12.9-inch Apple tablets.

Its small size and lack of Smart-Connector also make it less suitable for work than the Pro series tablets in the iPad camp, but the smaller tablet in the series is not intended to replace a laptop.

It's still quite a powerful tablet, thanks to 2GB of RAM and the aging but still impressive Apple A8. The screen remains sharp, rich in color and easy to see even in bright sunlight.

The iPad Mini 4 is without a doubt the best small tablet in the series, and it's also a fraction of the cost of the Pro range, with a price tag starting at $399. Models come in capacities up to 128GB of storage, so you won't be limited by any restrictions - although the Mini 4 doesn't have a 256GB version like the iPad Pro.

Notably, it was replaced by the iPad Mini (2019), which will be a much better value for most users, but it's still a serious tablet in 2020.

The history of Apple tablets begins more than 15 years ago - in 2000. However, the brand introduced the first model only in 2004, calling it “Prototype 035.” It was 3 times thicker than modern iPads, with wide bezels and performance that would now be unable to satisfy the needs of even the most unassuming users. 8 years have passed since the first model went on sale, and a review of all iPad models has become relevant for those who want to get acquainted with the equipment of the legendary brand for the first time.

iPad 1

The first iPad model came out in 2010. It had modest characteristics, but this did not prevent the gadget from becoming a breakthrough in the field of modern technology. At the time of release, Apple admitted that the device implemented only a minimal set of ideas. Here's what fans of the brand received in 2010:

  • the ability to choose memory of 16, 32 or 64 GB;
  • A4 processor with 1 core;
  • in terms of design, the device received only black color;
  • lack of camera;
  • “heaviness” is 680-730 g.
  • Some time after the start of sales, the first complaints began to appear: the iPad was very weak in terms of the operating system, people did not have enough camera to take pictures. However, most of the fans were happy with the product. During 1 year of sales, Apple sold more than 7 million devices.

    Fact! Externally, the device turned out to be angular, with huge frames, 13 mm wide, and it was not very convenient to use.

    The functionality of the first iPad in 2010 was impressive, but for a modern user its capabilities would not be enough: surfing the Internet, reading email, social networks, taking notes. But you can’t communicate via video call on Skype.

    iPad 2

    Literally a year later, the second iPad 2 model was released in 2011. Here the experts have tried a little better on the technical characteristics:

    • the device received a body in white or black;
    • the amount of memory remains in 16, 32 and 64 GB;
    • the processor has become more powerful - A5 with 2 cores;
    • added a 0.3 MP front camera and a 0.9 MP rear camera;
    • screen resolution – 1064x768 pixels;
    • weight decreased slightly - 601-613 g.

    The demand for the second model increased several times, because in this device the company was able to correct most of the mistakes made. The back cover has become smoother and more comfortable, and the speaker has also gone there.

    Fact! From the first model to the latest headliners, Apple releases only devices without the ability to expand storage, so you need to choose models with the optimal number of GB in advance.

    The second version began to work 2 times faster due to a powerful processor and increased volume. Before the advent of the iPad Air, the model was the lightest and thinnest.

    iPad 3

    Following the second model, in 2012 the company released an even more advanced iPad 3, which retained the internal memory capacity of 16, 32 or 64 GB, but at the same time became 4 times more powerful than the first model:

    • quad-core A5X processor;
    • the front camera retained the characteristic of 0.3 megapixels, but the rear one became as much as 5 megapixels;
    • screen resolution increased to 2048x1536 pixels;
    • but the weight of the device has increased to 660 g.

    Sales, as in the case of model 1, were quite high. However, there were no real differences from the 2nd model in the third iPad. In addition, it weighed 50 g more, which was felt when held in your hands for a long time.

    The company began receiving complaints that the device heats up very quickly, causing discomfort and causing lags during prolonged use. At the same time, a positive improvement in the screen was noted - it became 45% brighter and more pleasant, while the battery performance increased by at least 2 times.

    For the first time, this device made it possible to make Full HD videos. Unlike previous models, the RAM is now 1024 MB. The first iPad in history, which became an alternative to a laptop. It was possible to edit photos and videos, and use other professional-level applications.

    iPad 4

    The fourth model was released in 2012 immediately after the third, but its huge difference was the display with Retina technology. The device received a powerful processor with 4 A6X cores, but the resolution and screen size remained the same - 9.7 inches with 2048x1536 pixels.

    Fact! The iPad 4 was positioned as an improved model of the 3 series of tablets. Externally, it was distinguished by a charging connector.

    The quality of the camera also increased, and AirDrop technology was implemented for the first time, with which users could transfer files over wireless networks.

    iPad mini

    Together with the iPad 4, the company released the first model of a smaller device, the iPad mini, in 2012:

    • like the older model, there is a choice of memory of 16, 32 or 64 GB;
    • the front camera received a characteristic of 1.2 megapixels, and the rear one – 5 megapixels;
    • the device screen was 7.9 inches;
    • a dual-core A5 processor was installed inside;
    • The weight of the device barely reached 312 g, which was 2 times less than previous models!

    From a technical point of view, the iPad mini was almost identical to the second generation of tablets. However, it had a better front camera and also integrated a new charging port.

    Compared to the iPad 4, the miniature model received only 1024x768 pixels for screen resolution. The battery was also weaker. However, given that the monitor diagonal was 7.9 inches, this was enough. For the first time, separate buttons for volume control appeared on the tablet.

    iPad Air

    The real breakthrough was the 2013 model – iPad Air. Here, for the first time, a new shade of the rear panel has been added, as well as increased storage capacity. The device became the lightest in the company's history:

    • storage size added – 128 GB;
    • “space gray” coloring became available, as well as a completely white tablet;
    • camera characteristics have been preserved: 1.2 megapixels for the front and 5 megapixels for the rear;
    • the device received a quad-core A7 + M7 processor;
    • weight was only 478 g.

    The tablet became mega-popular, the company received sales that had never been seen before. The screen panel has acquired new shapes: the frames have become much thinner, and the size at 9.7 inches has become more compact.

    Fact! The device was 3 mm shorter and 20.5 mm narrower than its predecessor, and also lost 5.5 mm in thickness.

    On this device, separate buttons were implemented for adjusting the volume, and on the back of the lid, instead of the usual speaker, two stereo speakers appeared. Added a built-in microphone.

    “Inside” the device became several times more powerful than its predecessor - now there was not one processor, but two. The amount of RAM remained at 1024 MB, but this is still enough.

    iPad mini 2

    At the beginning of 2014, the company released a smaller version of the iPad Air - iPad mini 2, with almost the same characteristics:

    • added storage size of 128 GB;
    • white and gray shades of the body;
    • the 1.2 megapixel and 5 megapixel camera has been preserved;
    • the screen received a new resolution at 7.9 inches – 1024x768 pixels;
    • The weight of the device was no more than 341 g.

    Additionally, the second version of the miniature tablet received a Retina screen. The device works longer due to the use of an advanced battery model.

    iPad Air 2

    An even more powerful, advanced tablet with an improved processor, increased quality of the rear camera and a new shade appeared in mid-2014:

    • now iPad Air 2 – available in gold color;
    • the front camera retained the figure of 1.2 megapixels, while the rear one received as much as 8 megapixels;
    • excluded 32 GB storage capacity: only 16, 64 and 128 GB;
    • installed an eight-core A8X + M8 processor;
    • The weight of the device is within 444 g.

    The thickness of the device has decreased by 1.4 mm, and the weight has decreased by 34 g on average. Now the screen has stopped reflecting due to a special coating, and a fingerprint scanner has appeared on the Home button.

    For the first time, it became possible to select an iPad not only with a Wi-Fi connection, but also with a SIM connection; the function was called Cellular.

    The processor provided performance 40% higher than in the first generation iPad Air. Overheating of the system was also ruled out.

    iPad mini 3

    The third model of the miniature device was released in 2014, which also eliminated the 32 GB storage size and added several improvements:

    • white and golden body color;
    • processor with 4 cores A7 + M7;
    • The weight of the device remained at 341 g with a diagonal of 7.9 inches.

    The miniature size offered users several advantages: convenience, the ability to choose a configuration with a SIM card, light weight and reduced cost.

    iPad Pro 12.9

    In 2015, the world saw a new tablet format with an increased screen diagonal:

    • 16 GB memory capacity was excluded, 32 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB were added;
    • the front camera of the device is 7 megapixels, and the rear camera is 12 megapixels;
    • installed an ultra-powerful A10X + M10 processor with 12 cores;
    • screen diagonal became 12 inches;
    • weight increased to 677-692 g.

    The new modification under the “Pro” tag was created specifically to solve the problems of professionals of various levels. The case contains 4 stereo speakers that provide incredible sound.

    The case has a connector for connecting a special keyboard, which made the tablet a full-fledged alternative to a laptop. In terms of performance, the professional series iPad is not much different from laptops. On such a large screen, the manufacturer has added the ability to run 2 programs simultaneously and display them in different windows. An additional advantage is the ability to use a Pencil stylus.

    In 2017, the company re-released the model, giving it a new memory capacity of 512 GB. The resolution has also increased to 2732x2048 pixels.

    iPad mini 4

    The fourth mini iPad model was released in 2015; the memory capacity was returned to 32 GB. At the same time, some other changes appeared:

    • eight-core processor A8 + M8;
    • execution in white, gray and gold shades;
    • the rear camera has become more powerful - 8 megapixels, while the front camera remains 1.2 megapixels;
    • weight decreased to 300 g.

    Externally, the gadget began to differ from the previous miniature model - it became lighter and thinner. The processor has reached the level of iPad Air 2 in terms of power. This “baby” runs any applications and programs perfectly.

    iPad Pro 9.7

    A logical continuation of the new professional line in 2016 was the iPad Pro with a reduced display diagonal:

    • 12 processor cores A9X + M9;
    • 5 MP front camera with 12 MP rear camera;
    • a new shade group is available - rose gold;
    • memory 32, 128 or 256 GB;
    • weight up to 444 g;
    • monitor diagonal 9.7 inches.

    Many people liked the usual size of the device, because 12.9 inches is not suitable for mobile work for everyone.

    Fact! The new model has improved color rendering and has a function for adapting brightness to environmental conditions.

    The tablet can be used with a keyboard and stylus.

    iPad Pro 10.5

    In 2017, they released a new professional iPad model with a 10.5-inch screen diagonal:

    • storage capacity – 32, 128 or 256 GB;
    • front camera is 7 MP, and rear camera is 12 MP;
    • processor with 12 cores A10X + M10;
    • All colors available except black;
    • 4 GB of RAM, which is comparable to a multimedia laptop;
    • weight up to 477 g.

    The new version has become a kind of alternative to the too large iPad or the 9.7-inch version. The only disadvantage of this powerful model is its too high cost, literally comparable to Apple laptops.

    iPad 5

    In 2017, the manufacturer remembered the old series of simple iPads and released the 5th series of products:

    • classic screen diagonal 9.7 inches;
    • 32 or 128 GB of memory;
    • 12 processor cores A9 + M9;
    • The front camera resolution is 1.2 megapixels, and the rear one is 5 megapixels;
    • weight within 478 g;
    • The colors for the device were white, gray and gold.

    The new tablet is a unique combination of parameters previously used in the professional and miniature series.

    Fact! An unusual feature of the gadget is its lowest cost.

    This fact has made the device attractive to users who take tablets to watch movies, communicate, surf or read.

    The advantage of the model is the screen, separated from the display. Thus, if the tablet is broken, the monitor can be changed without replacing the entire unit, as was the case in older models.

    Unlike the iPad Air 2, this version has an improved processor and anti-glare coating. If you compare it with the first series of professional iPads, you can notice the difference with the camera and speakers - this model has only 2 of them. You won’t be able to work with a keyboard and an electronic pencil, nor will you be able to shoot video in 4K.

    Which iPad is better?

    It's impossible to choose the best iPad for everyone, so you should divide them into classes: most powerful, biggest and best value. Some people prefer miniature devices, then it is appropriate to highlight the best representative of the mini class.

    The most technologically advanced tablet

    The iPad Pro 10.5 falls into this category. Its main advantage is the incredible processor performance, which will satisfy the needs of any professional, as well as the ability to use a stylus and keyboard. But the key drawback remains the high cost of the tablet - almost $1,000 including the purchase of a keyboard and stylus, which are not included in the package.

    The smallest and lightest tablet

    The best device in this category is the latest model iPad mini 4. It has superior hardware to other options and costs much less than large gadgets. Ideal for one-handed operation. However, there is a drawback - only configurations with 128 GB of memory are sold, which greatly increases the cost of the device.

    Best value iPad

    The best buy is a refurbished iPad Air 2, which is not much different from the new model. Unlike regular versions of the iPad, it has minimal weight and maximum compactness. Configuration with LTE modem available. The only negative is the lack of stereo speakers.

    iPad Pro 9.7

    Another profitable model that supports stereo, but does not include a stylus and keyboard. The price for the professional model is one of the best on the market for used or new products.

    The biggest iPad

    The 12.9-inch iPad Pro wins this category. However, you will have to pay much more for the device than for other gadgets, while receiving some advantages: as many as 4 speakers, the most powerful hardware and the ability to connect a stylus and keyboard.

    Is the Cellular feature necessary?

    Some iPad models are available in two versions: Wi-Fi, or with Cellular + Wi-Fi. The second modification allows you to use the tablet as a modem - insert a SIM card inside and connect to the Internet without a Wi-Fi source nearby. The cost of tablets with an integrated modem is 5-10 thousand rubles higher, but this function is necessary if a person travels often: to other countries, out of town, or to places where there is no Wi-Fi source.

    Fact! If you are used to using your tablet as a GPS navigator, remember that Wi-Fi modifications do not have this unit.

    But, if the tablet is used most of the time in the office or at home, or in a cafe where Wi-Fi is available, there is no need to overpay 10,000 rubles for the modem function.

    Built-in storage capacity

    The maximum volume in Apple devices is 512 GB for the top Pro model. But when choosing any option, you need to take into account that at least 5 GB is occupied by the iOs operating system and its applications.

    If you prefer to store a lot of photos, or arrange selfie sessions every day in large quantities, then you should not choose less than 128 GB. If you only need a tablet for the Internet, movies, and communication, then 32-64 GB is quite enough.

    The choice of the ideal iPad is determined by individual preferences: screen size, passion for games, purpose of use - for entertainment or work. Any Apple device has an excellent screen and high performance. However, it is very difficult to guess the amount of built-in storage, which cannot be expanded in the future using a micro card.

iPad what is it? iPad is a modern compact device that completely replaces personal computers. iPad is more than a tablet computer. This is a classic example of an Internet tablet, the diagonal of which starts at 7 inches. Tablets run on the same platform as the iPhone - this is, of course, iOS. Today we will tell you what iPads there are and introduce all generations of iPad in order.

iPads are not much different from PCs, except for slightly reduced capabilities, there are practically no differences. The device is equipped with a touch display. iPad features:

  • do drawing;
  • watch videos and films;
  • perform office tasks;
  • surf the Internet;
  • play the same games as on the iPhone (though it’s much more convenient on a tablet);
  • upload interesting content and much more.

iPod and iPad: the same thing?

People who do not understand Apple technology often confuse iPod and iPad. Indeed, the names are a little similar, but in reality these are two completely different devices. iPods are music players.

History of the iPad

The Cupertino team didn’t really try to roll out a competitive product on the tablet market. Their main goal was to release something that was at the same time as good as a smartphone and a personal computer. Therefore, the first model of this brand was very different from other tablets and completely changed the idea of such devices.

A “tablet” with WiFi and a then-simple Apple A4 processor, first released in 2010, was met with caution. The iPad was not taken seriously, at most as an e-reader. However, on the first day of sales, more than 300 thousand units were sold.

The company's authority grew, and a year later an improved second-generation model was released. It was thinner, more productive, lighter. The main feature of this model was the introduction of a front camera. It was thanks to the iPad 2 that Apple gained new fans.

When Steve Jobs unveiled the second iPad in 2011, he was convinced that many corporations were moving in the wrong direction. The future lies in a small-sized device that you can easily take with you. One of the founders of Apple predicted that Internet tablets will completely displace PCs from the market. The history of the iPad is not over yet, and together we will follow the new products.

After some time, mini and Pro models appeared. Responding to specific user requests, they are ideally tailored for any user. Those who prefer to carry a computer in their pocket will choose the small version, and for those who like to see much more and have a gadget with a large display, the Pro model has been invented.

iPad Specifications

It is difficult to answer this question unequivocally, since in the entire history of iPads there are almost 20 such devices. Consider common hardware. The characteristics of the iPad1 are very different from today's parameters, but the entire line has common indicators. Also, the characteristics of the iPad Pro have been much better than the standard Apple tablet model for several years.

Battery

The iPad's battery has always had a large capacity for two reasons - to support the large screen and to satisfy the user's need for extended use. The same lithium-ion battery is built into the case as in the iPhone. To charge such a giant, regular iPhone charging is not suitable, so a 10-watt charger is always included in the kit.

The company claims that the battery provides continuous 10 hours of video and at least a month of standby time.

Screen

  • The latest iPad model, released in 2018, has a built-in LCD display called Liquid Retina.

Photo: Liquid Retina screen
  • A distinctive feature is that the screen occupies the entire panel area (in new generations there is no Touch ID button).
  • According to Apple, this display provides maximum image accuracy and is capable of displaying 326 pixels per inch.
  • True Tone technology adapts to the environment and produces color rendering that is most comfortable for the eye.
  • The oleophobic coating is resistant to fingerprints and smudges on the screen.

CPU

The new devices feature the advanced A12X Bionic neural processor, which is comparable to desktop computers. It is several times faster and more powerful than the previous generation - the processor is capable of performing 5 trillion operations per second.

iPad, what are the characteristics

Camera

Takes excellent photos with a resolution of 12 megapixels. Records video in 4K. iPad also has a panoramic mode, Live Photos, and improved Smart HDR technology.

Excellent camera on all types of iPads

Memory

It’s hard to say specifically about memory - the volume varies from 32 Gigabytes to 1 Terabyte.

Unlock, authenticate and Apple Pay

The latest facial recognition technology Face ID performs three functions at once. Thanks to the front camera with the TrueDepth system (located in the “monobrow” at the top of the screen), the user will be able to unlock the iPad in a matter of seconds and make a secure payment via Apple Pay.

What are the types and types of iPad?

As mentioned just above, iPads are distinguished by:

  • size (mini or proshka);
  • functionality (from old models to modern ones);
  • memory capacity.

What are the iPad models and how to distinguish them?

It is enough to know that there are 7 generations. They are distinguished by the back and front panels (is there, for example, a Home button).

  • The first iPad 1G was released with Wi-Fi and 3G module. Externally, it’s easy to distinguish – it’s plump and looks like an iPhone 3G.

iPad model.
  • iPad 2 received several models at once: two revisions with Wi-Fi and a 3G GSM module. It differs from the first iPad in the thickness and completely different design of the back panel. For the first time, the speaker is located at the rear in the lower left corner (as in several subsequent models).

2nd generation iPad
  • iPad 3 came out with a cellular module (Cellular) and, like previous models, with Wi-Fi. It is difficult to distinguish from the second, except perhaps by the Retina display.

Differences between iPads
  • iPad 4 has the same communication modules as the third one. This is a modified tablet that can connect to a personal computer. There was also an innovation in cellular communications - LTE appeared, but, unfortunately, this did not affect Russia.

The characteristics of iPad minis are no different from their older brothers.
  • The iPad Air, iPad mini 2 and 3 finally have a full 4G connection for everyone. The model has been well redesigned - reduced in thickness and updated in design.

  • The sixth generation iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4 are easy to distinguish from previous models - instead of a square on the Home button, a Touch ID fingerprint has appeared. There is also no silent mode switch on the side. Became even thinner than previous models.

What are the 6th generation iPad models?
  • Keyboard support was added, which resulted in the presence of a special port on the side. The 12.9-inch model is hard to miss due to its size and completely new and different performance.

  • iPad 5 is a budget model of the iPad Air. Here Apple did not introduce a new product, but took a step back.

The sizes of the iPad according to the classification of models do not differ much from each other.
  • iPad Pro 2 is no different from the first generation in terms of characteristics. Except that there is a new memory capacity of 512 GB and slightly different display sizes.

  • iPad 6, like its predecessor number 5, is an economy option. Two differences are the processor and hardware, similar to the iPhone 7 smartphone, and for the first time support for the new accessory Apple Pencil 1st and 2nd generation.

iPad tablets characteristics
  • iPad Pro 3rd generation changes the concept of iPads in principle. We can say that this is an enlarged copy of the design and characteristics of the iPhone X. Externally, it differs in that a “unibrow” with Face ID appears, and the Home button with a fingerprint is removed. Also, the dimensions differ from the iPhone X and iPad.

This is a list of all iPads today. Types of iPads determine prices in the mobile technology market. For example, iPad Pro 3 will cost about 110,000 rubles.

Who is the iPad suitable for?

You should definitely consider buying an iPad if you are an artist or if you feel like:

  • The screen on the phone is too small for watching movies;
  • Gaming performance leaves much to be desired;
  • typing text on the keyboard is inconvenient.

Apple has always been distinguished by its ability to present its own products. In 2010, Steve Jobs showed the world the iPad. In his opinion, the device was supposed to partially replace computers due to the compactness of the gadget. Moreover, the company has prepared several branded lines designed to fulfill the assigned tasks: work, study, leisure. We invite you to take a closer look at the families of tablets.

Classic line

Was shown in 2010. A revolutionary product at that time, now it looks clumsy. The weight of the gadget exceeded half a kilogram, and the technical parameters left much to be desired. At the first iPad there was no camera.

In 2011, the situation did not change radically. The iPad 2 looked awkward. Although the body was made more streamlined. But the technical characteristics have improved noticeably. U second iPad there was even a camera.

In 2012 third revision tablets created a real sensation. The design began to resemble the modern look of devices, and the technical parameters of iPad 3 took several steps forward:

In 2012, another event happened - the iPad 4 was released. In fact, the public was presented with a modified version of the “troika”, from which it is practically no different except for a few points:

The classic line of tablets was in a lull until 2017, when the company showed off the iPad 5. Distinctive model features consist of support for the latest OS versions, an updated processor and increased battery capacity. More details about technical specifications:

mini line

A compact copy of the classic iPad model - that's all you need to know about the mini line. In addition to its miniature size, the device also has other distinctive characteristics: narrow frames, a monochromatic body color design and buttons for volume control have physical media. We invite you to look at the hardware of a tablet computer iPad mini:

Successful sales of the “mini” forced the company to work hard on developing a compact family. We suggest you take a look what changed in iPad mini 2:

Apple did not delay the continuation for long and showed the general public the third member of the “mini” family. Most of the innovations concerned design. So the “home” key became identical in color to the body. Characteristics

One of the journalists called the fourth mini “a kitten in which a tiger is hidden.” It’s hard to argue with the statement, since the tablet, despite its modest dimensions, has a solid filling. iPad mini 4 is:

Air line

At the end of 2013, the Apple campaign prepared a new line - Air. The main difference from other families is the search for a golden mean between compactness and ergonomics, which is reflected in the appearance of the device. In technical terms, the iPad Air didn’t fly anywhere:

Literally a few months later in 2014, the second revision was released. Visually, the tablets were practically no different from each other. The only thing that influenced the design was the addition of golden color. Major changes iPadAir 2 touched on the hardware:

Pro versions of the tablet

The first tablet whose main audience is professionals (artists, animators, engineers, etc.). A distinctive feature of the family is the increased screen diagonal, as well as support for Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard tools. In all revisions, the hardware of the family is noticeably superior to representatives of other lines:

We present to your attention the smallest tablet of the professional family. Thanks to its small dimensions, the presented product becomes the most practical option for portable use. The developers awarded the iPad Pro 9.7 with the most powerful camera. Most other characteristics remain virtually unchanged

Representative of the line of the most powerful tablets from Apple with a 10.5-inch screen. It differs from previous revisions of “Professional Devices” in its average screen diagonal. Key parameters:

The broad consumer audience of the tablet market is gradually adopting a narrow focus. iPads are used primarily by people in creative professions. Especially for them, Apple has prepared an improved version of the largest iPad, which was released in 2017. The device has the following characteristics:

Latest iPad model 2018 (sixth generation)

The release of iPad 2018 is timed to coincide with the successful start of sales of the iPhone X, which was reflected in the design of the tablet. By tradition, the device has become a little thinner. The main changes lie in the technical characteristics, which will be discussed in more detail:

  • Aluminum frame, available in colors: “gold”, “space gray”, “silver”.
  • 8 MP camera, supporting shooting in HD quality.
  • Volume drive: 32 and 128 GB.
  • Quad core CPU A10
  • Display Retina measuring 9.7 inches.
  • Touch ID.
  • Versions: A1893, A1954

New iPad release date

According to analysts, there is no point in expecting a new version of the iPad in the coming year. The presentation of the iPad 6 took place just recently, so the issue of the new product is postponed until next year. Among the new products this year you can only expect new versions OS, as well as the availability of the AirPower charging station. In addition, the company has not yet officially announced the iPhone SE 2.
