If you need to count the number of characters in cells, use the LEN function - which counts letters, numbers, characters and all spaces. For example, the length of "It's 98 degrees today, so I'll go swimming" (excluding the quotes) is 42 characters - 31 letters, 2 numbers, 8 spaces, a comma and 2 apostrophes.

To use the function, enter = LENGTH (cell) in the formula bar, press Enter on your keyboard.

Multiple cells: To apply the same formula to multiple cells, enter the formula in the first cell and then drag the fill handle down (or across) the range of cells.

To get the total number of characters in multiple cells is to use the sum functions together with LENGTH. In this example, the LEN function counts the number of characters in each cell and the sum function adds the counters:

= SUM ((LEN function ( cell1 ), function LEN ( cell2 ), (function LEN ( cell3 )) )) .

Below are some examples of how the LENGTH function works.

Copy the table below and paste it into cell A1 in your Excel worksheet. Drag the formula from cell B2 to B4 to see the length of the text in all cells in column A.

Counting characters in one cell

Click cell B2.

Enter formula =LENGTH(a2).

The formula counts the characters in cell A2, 27 "Total", which contains all the spaces and the period at the end of the sentence.

Note: LEN counts spaces after the last character.

Character counting V several cells

Click cell B2.

Press Ctrl+C to copy cell B2, and then select cells B3 and B4 and press Ctrl+V to paste the formula into cells B3:B4.

This formula will be copied to cells B3 and B4, and the function will count the characters in each cell (20 27 and 45).

Counting the total number of characters

In the example book, click cell B6.

Enter a formula in the cell =SUM(LENGTH(A2),LENGTH(A3),LENGTH(A4)) and press ENTER.

This way the number of characters in each of the three cells is counted and summed up in (92).

One of the most useful word processing tasks in Excel is to automatically count the number of words or specific words in a line. There are many different ways to solve this problem, but we will look at the simplest one.

Formula for counting the number of words in an Excel cell

How to count the number of words and spaces in Excel cells? In fact, words in a line are separated by a space character. There is 1 space between each word, so there are always one fewer spaces in a text line than words. A simple formula to understand: number of words per line = number of spaces +1. In other words, we need a formula to count the number of spaces in a line and add +1 to the result of its calculation.

To create a formula in Excel to count the number of words, we need to complete 3 steps:

Determine the length of the original string including spaces.
Determine the length of the source string without spaces.
Subtract a string without spaces from the length of a string with spaces.

The above formula contains 3 functions. One of them is the SUBSTITUTE function, and then there are two identical LENGTHs.

First, the LENGTH function checks the length of the text wash while in its original form in cell A1.

SUBSTITUTE(A2;" ";"")

Placing the SUBSTANCE function as an argument to the LENGTH function allows us to automatically determine the length of the string without spaces.

LENGTH(SUBSTITUTE(A2;" ";""))+1

Note! At this stage you should add +1, because the last word in the text does not have a corresponding space.

Practical applications of the above descriptive formulas are most often found when analyzing large lists of key phrases.

Formula for counting the number of characters in an Excel cell

Determine the length of the original word “Mississippi” = 9.
We determine the length of the same word, but without the letter “C” - “Miiiipi” = 6.
Subtract the word without the letter “C” from the original word: 9-6=3.

As a result, the formula automatically counted the number of letters “C” in all words:

Note. The formula uses the CAPITAL function to capitalize all letters in words because the SUBSTITUTE function is case sensitive. And we are looking for the capital letter “C” in each word of the city name.

There are many different programs on the World Wide Web for counting the number of characters in a given text. These can be either small programs specially developed for this purpose or various text editors.

The most popular way to determine the number of characters in a text for many users has been and remains the time-tested text editor Microsoft Word.

Determining the number of characters for whole text

You need to place the cursor at the beginning of the text, more precisely, before the first character of the text. Then you should find and use the “Statistics” tool in the Word editor, which is ideally suited for such calculations.

Looking for Statistics inWord 2007

1) Place the text in the Word 2007 editor.

2) Place the cursor at the beginning of the text.

3) Find the bottom line in the Word editor, which is called the status bar (number 2 in Fig. 1):

4) Click on the “Number of words” option (number 1 in Fig. 1), after which the “Statistics” window appears. Here we see that the number of characters (without spaces) is 2.304, and with spaces – 2.651.

By the way, if someone tells you that you need, for example, 2000 characters, without specifying whether with or without spaces, then this means “with spaces.”

All this is good. But what if there is a status bar in Word 2007, but there is no “Number of words” option in it?

In this case, click on an empty space in the status bar with RMB (right mouse button), for example, in the place where the number 2 is in Fig. 1. The “Status Bar Settings” window will appear (Fig. 2):

Here you should check the box next to the “Number of words” option (number 2 in Fig. 2). After which it will automatically appear in the status bar of Word.

Statistics in Word 2010

With the left mouse button, you need to single-click on the “Service” function located in the top panel of Word (Fig. 3).

Counting characters in a piece of text

Often there is a need to calculate the number of characters for a specific part of the text. This is not difficult to do in Word:

1) you just need to select the required part of the text to count the number of characters and

2) find the “Statistics” window (that is, perform the same manipulations as described above for the whole text).

What is a sign reader?

Below are descriptions of all the fields and values that are used when counting characters and characters in text. It is also indicated how each such value is calculated.

Total characters

All characters in the text are counted. Everything is taken into account and counted - letters, numbers, punctuation marks, as well as spaces. The total number of characters in the text is displayed.

Number of characters without spaces (zbp)

All characters and characters in the text are counted, with the exception of spaces. All spaces are excluded from the calculation and are not included in this result. This value is very often used when calculating or indicating the cost of articles per 1000 characters without spaces (ZBP).

Word count

All found words in the text are counted and displayed.

Punctuation marks

Punctuation marks are considered separately. The counting is based on the most common punctuation marks. , : ; ! ? ... , slash \ | / ⁄ , brackets () () ⟨⟩, dash - ‒ – - ―, quotation marks " " ` „ “ “ “ “ “ “ ‘ ’ .

Below is a description of all the additional properties of the text, such as the original text size, how many spaces there are in the text, and extra spaces. It is described how all these values are calculated.

Original text size

The raw text size contains the length of the raw text, which may contain service characters such as tab, linefeed, carriage return, and other characters that should not be counted in the text count. Web browsers do not display such symbols and are not visible on the site page.

Number of spaces

Counts all spaces in the text, sums up the number of all spaces found and the resulting value is displayed in this field.

Extra spaces

Extra spaces are double spaces one after the other, the number of which can be two or more. All such spaces are considered unnecessary and should not be present in the text. Extra spaces also include spaces that appear before or after a paragraph, as well as on blank lines.

Count HTML tags

Additional option. By default, if the text contains HTML tags, they are ignored and not taken into account when counting the text, thus resulting in a character count of pure text, without HTML tags. This option is very useful, use it if you need to count text, including html markup.

Content cost calculation

This function will be interesting and useful to many journalists, copywriters and rewriters who write articles and texts to order. Do punctuation marks count when counting characters?

Yes, they count. Periods, commas, dashes, exclamation marks, question marks and other marks are counted when counting characters in the text. Suppose you need to add a site to the directory by coming up with a title that is only 80 characters long, and if this title contains punctuation marks, they will also be counted as characters. Space is also a punctuation mark and is also counted.

Copywriters in most cases indicate the cost of text per number of characters without spaces (ZBP) in favor of the customer, but all other characters are counted and taken into account. The remaining characters are not excluded because their number has little effect on the final cost of the text.
